Learn all about the different characters from the Faraway Tree books. In the beginning I will introduce only the main 9 or 10 characters, but also a description of some of the people from the strange lands up in the clouds will soon appear. If you have some good information, comments, or maybe your own description of some of the folks, you are welcome to mail them to me.

how old are the folks in the tree?

by johansrk

We learn a lot about the people in the tree an wood and lands. But how old do you think they are.
Can their age be compared to human age, or can Silky for example be much older than what a normal human can become.

The Tree, itself

by The Angry Pixie

What a marvellous tree. So alive, changing all the time. What glorious times we could have there. I have searched for the Enchanted Forest - if only it were near me!

Apart from myself, (I'm not really that angry!) I love Moon-Face and Old Saucepan Man. Silky is also a treasure. Even old Watzisname can be good company. Good old Dame Washalot is so good at attending to my laundry!

As Saucepanman said to me earlier:

Two goats for the larder,
Two tyres for the van,
Two scarves for the leopards,
And I'm a great man!"

MOON-FACE

Dear old Moon-face. He is a most peculiar looking person. His head is as big and round as the moon. His house is all round and consists of one large room. In the middle of his house is the hole, where his slippery slip starts, and which goes all the way down inside of the Faraway Tree. Just next to the hole is a curved bed, a curved table and two curved chairs. Moon Face loves toffee. He allows people to use his slippery slip for toffee.

He is best friends with Silky and the Saucepan man. Moon-face knows many people, and is known as a trust worthy and clever person, although he sometimes can't control himself and becomes naughty. Just as many of the other folks, the illustrators of the many version of the Faraway Tree have had their influence on the looks of him. Also the clothes he wears has changed over time. Sometimes he wears nice and very formal clothes like the picture to the left. Other times he wear a stripped full bodylength wearing like on the cover of "Up the Faraway Tree" from Beaver edition 1981 (to the right). This is the version of him I like the most.

Has he got ears like a goblin, or has he got none at all. Here there are many versions too. In the 2005 edition of the Faraway Tree, Moon-face still has many of the characteristics that is seen in the older versions, but he has become much more "children-friendly" or simple. When I try to imagine how Moon-face looks, he is a strange character, totally unique. He should not wear nice and fancy clothes, but wear more worn out and robust clothes. Also I like the idea that he has no ears, or at least they are hidden somehow. So I guess that the picture of him flying on the broomstick, is the one I prefer the most. You might be of another opinion.
