Learn all about the different characters from the Faraway Tree books. In the beginning I will introduce only the main 9 or 10 characters, but also a description of some of the people from the strange lands up in the clouds will soon appear. If you have some good information, comments, or maybe your own description of some of the folks, you are welcome to mail them to me.

how old are the folks in the tree?

by johansrk

We learn a lot about the people in the tree an wood and lands. But how old do you think they are.
Can their age be compared to human age, or can Silky for example be much older than what a normal human can become.

The Tree, itself

by The Angry Pixie

What a marvellous tree. So alive, changing all the time. What glorious times we could have there. I have searched for the Enchanted Forest - if only it were near me!

Apart from myself, (I'm not really that angry!) I love Moon-Face and Old Saucepan Man. Silky is also a treasure. Even old Watzisname can be good company. Good old Dame Washalot is so good at attending to my laundry!

As Saucepanman said to me earlier:

Two goats for the larder,
Two tyres for the van,
Two scarves for the leopards,
And I'm a great man!"

DAME WASHALOT

Oh, I just love Dame Washalot! She lives above Silky's place, and does nothing but wash all day. It's her passion. If she has no dirty clothes to wash, she will wash the clean clothes. You have to watch out, or you might get all soaked from her dirty washing water coming splashing down the Tree once in a while! She is an elderly, robust and very strong woman. She washes everyone's clothes. She even helps Jo, Bessie and Fanny's mother washing hers! A thing I have always wondered about, is how on earth she gets all that washing water up the tree. None of the books indicates this. Maybe she gets it from a well or spring down in the Enchanted Wood. That however, would mean a lot of climbing up and down of the Faraway Tree constantly, which is not that suited for an old woman.

She might have some kind of water supply up in the Tree, but I don't think that is the case either. What I think could be a good explanation however, could be that she simply has a large barrel for water up in the tree, which is filled with water from the clouds, which she lives pretty close to. Most, if not all people who has visited the Faraway Tree, has been soaked one or more times. Even Jo, Bessie and Fanny was not prepared for the big surprise they got the first time to the Enchanted wood.

One of Dame Washalot's good friends is the Old Woman Who Lives In A Shoe, which you can read about in "the Magic Faraway Tree". Besides her, she likes most of the people in the tree. However, she spends most of her time by herself, and doesn't go to as many strange lands as the others like to do. Like all of the other folks from the books, there are different interpretations of the looks of them. I personally really like the idea that she is big, fat, robust and strong. She likes working. She has clothes on that suits an old woman, and which are good and strong working clothes for doing her laundry.

Therefore the favorite picture of the woman is the top one.
